SOFLO’s Julio Horrego Makes “A” Final, Lismar Lyon Makes “B” Final On Final Day Of TYR Pro Swim Series (2024)

SAN ANTONIO, Tex., April 14, 2024—South Florida Aquatic Club’s Julio Horrego qualified sixth to make “A” finals in the 200-meter breaststroke Saturday on the fourth and final day of the 2024 TYR Pro Swim Series at Northside Swim Center.

Horrego, 25, a 2020 Tokyo Olympian for Honduras, after breaking his country’s national record in the 200-meter breaststroke time trial in a lifetime-best 2:15.09, made “A” finals and finished eighth in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:15.66. He finished sixth in prelims to qualify in a best time 2:14.15, dropping 3.04 seconds off his previous best of 2:17.19, to break his own national record.

SOFLO teammate Lismar Lyon, 23, of Venezuela, finished out her great week with a 13th place in the 50-meter freestyle in 25.28. She had qualified tenth in prelims to make “B” finals with a best time 25.19, dropping 0.35 from her previous best.

Lyon also made the “C” final of the 100-meter butterfly going a best time 1:00.46 in prelims for the 24th spot and lowered that in the “C” final in 1:00.23 to finish third. She also swam a 50-meter freestyle time trial in a lifetime-best 25.24, bettering her previous best of 25.86 by 0.27.

In other Saturday highlights:
World record holder Katie Ledecky of Gator Swim Club capped off the meet with a season-best 8:12.95 to win the 800-meter freestyle, 15 seconds ahead of teenager Jillian Cox.

Venezuelan national record holder Alfonso Mestre of Gator Swim Club knocked off Olympic gold medalist Bobby Finke of St. Petersburg Aquatics in 7:52.22. Finke finished in 7:54.48. Mestre already has a spot in the Paris Olympics.

Regan Smith, second fastest qualifier, won the 100-meter backstroke in 57.74. She won by more than a second ahead of Katharine Berkoff in 58.77.

Hungarian Hubert Kos won the 100-meter backstroke in a best time 53.08, more than second ahead of American Justin Ress in 54.36.

Kate Douglass of New York Athletic Club won the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:19.89, winning by almost five seconds.

Penn junior Matt Fallon knocked off Leon Marchand in the 200-meter breaststroke, 2:08.18-2:08.40. Fallon broke the Pro Swim Series record of 2:08.23.

Torri Huske won the 200-meter individual medley in a best time 2:08.47, just 1/10th of a second ahead of Alex Walsh.

Chase Kalisz, swimming unattached, came from behind in fourth place to win the 200-meter individual medley in 1:57.51. His breaststroke split was 33.36, helping him move into first.

Polish sprinter Kasia Wasick won the 50-meter freestyle in 24.20, just off her personal best of 23.95. The top six finishers were in the 24s.

Mexican national record holder Gabe Castano surprised the field to win the 50-meter freestyle in 21.70. Ryan Held was second in 21.79 and Caeleb Dressel finished third in 21.85.

It was the last full national meet before the Olympic Trials in June in Indianapolis.

200-meter individual medley: 1. Torri Huske, AAC 2:08.47, 2. Alex Walsh, UVA 2:08.60, 3. Sydney Pickrem, AGS 2:11.37.

50-meter freestyle: 1. Kasia Wasick, DM 24.20, 2. Abbey Weitzeil, CAL 24.27, 3. Gretchen Walsh, UVA 24.29.

800-meter freestyle: 1. Alfonso Mestre, GSC 7:52.22, 2. Bobby Finke, SPA 7:54.48, 3. Ilia Sibirtsev, UF 7:54.87.
